Found this article on physicist Lee Smolin's new book The Trouble with Physics. Sounds like a must-read. He's wondering why string theory is still dominating theoretical physics - especially in how funding is distributed to researchers - after 20 years during which:
a) none of the fundamental assumptions - like all the 'extra dimensions' - have been proven, or anything close to it.
and
b) the theory's proponents have been completely blindsided by most every major discovery in physics - like dark energy.
I guess if you want to write an interesting book, there are worse places to start than saying: "here's why everyone is complety wrong about everything." If nothing else, it does make you wonder, doesn't it?
